Sharks … most people fear them, but many people actually eat them without realizing it. There has been heated debate about the killing of sharks for food and for their fins; much of it due to misinformation.
Shark meat is widely used in the West and in Australia for the preparation of “fish and chips”. In the Caribbean region, shark steaks, fried shark and shark burgers are commonly eaten in Trinidad. Unknown to many Singaporeans, shark meat is actually used in commercially prepared “fish balls” and “fish cake”.
However, many Asian people still prefer eating only expensive sharksfin soup and not the shark meat, which is considered a poor man’s food. Perhaps this is where the problem lies … that there is the perception in the West that sharks are mostly hunted only for their fins in Asia.
